Switching from Neurontin to Tegretol...what might I expect?

Rick Bruce,

I was taking 900mg of Gabapentin (Neurontin) per day prior to going in the hospital. My neuro switched me off of it as he thought the Gabapentin was causing too much "brain fog". Guess I'll see how 200mg of Tegretol compares to 900mg of Gabapentin.

Fred,

If you mentioned it, I missed it and apologize; but how much Neurontin/Gabapentin were you taking prior to this procedure? I'm now trying to calibrate my Gaba. dosage level and am asking for input from members here that indicate they've been on Gaba. for a while. I was on 600mg per day--didn't even begin to do it for me as I have very intense Type1 shocks.Gabapentin is the only med that I currently take for my TN. Neurodoc said OK to increase by gradual steps...I'm now doing 1800mg, and pain is subsiding nicely for now, but I'm sleepy and "spaced-out"--(An old 1960's term) Neurodoc will change my meds if I express the need to do so...I'd prefer Gaba. if we can get the dosage figured out, as this med appears to be fairly benign. Thx. Rick

How are thing going Fred?

Headache is returning to normal levels elstep (a 5 or 6). I am stubbly today, need to shave, so I have to watch that I do not brush my stubble on the right side. My right temple aches pretty hardily and I am still getting pings in my occipital region on the right side. My eye is smoldering right at the outer corner. Been sleepy all day. That could be fatigue or the Tegretol I suppose.

Thanks for checking on me.

when do you increase on the Tegretol?

I have a follow-up in six weeks unless I get worse.

Are you now only taking 200mgs of Tegretol per day without anything else?

elstep,

I am now on 150mg Indocin and 200mg Tegretol per day.

How are you coping?

I have not been doing great since I have been home. I am not sure if it is the DHE-45 wearing off or my body adjusting to Tegretol, but I have felt very strange the past couple of days. Yesterday was an especially terrible day. I got weak at the grocery store, I mean really weak...like could barely hold on to cans of vegetables. My wife had to drive home. I literally sort of shuffled into the house, down the hall, and into our room. I managed to grab a throw blanket along the way, and fell face first into our bed. I kicked my shoes off from bed, and awoke something like 5 hours later. I am supposed to go back to teaching tomorrow, commuting 35 minutes each way, and I could not handle a trip out to lunch and the grocery store. Had very vivid dreams all night last night, though they made absolutely no sense once I woke up this morning. I am having a lot of bruising from the IVs and shots that I received while in the hospital. I also sort of feel like my hands are barely attached to my arms. I am not sure that that makes sense. I have have have to go back to work tomorrow.

hi really dosen't sound like you are fit to go to work tomorrow !!

200m of tegretol is quite a low dose ,I take 500m also 1800m of gabapentine and ami at night .

how long has it been since you stopped the gabapentine ,I ask because I once very very stupidly decided I didn't want to have TN anymore and just stopped taking the gabapentine and felt very much the way you described .

I think maybe you need to seek some help .

I do hope things get better for you ,Lyn

Lynda,

They took me off of Gabapentin on Monday 2/27. I am not sure why the neurologists took me off of it all at once. I did not think it was wise, but wanted to follow Doctor's orders. I have already been to two neurologists, my general practitioner, and been through a hospital stay. What other sort of help should I seek?

I dont know what to say to help. Can anyone advise fred?

Should I take another day tomorrow and try to see my GP? Give a call to my neurologist? I am really at a loss. I have a few more paid days I can take, but there are things like lesson plans and reliability.

It also seems like it is taking me a few seconds to respond to things. My wife and best friend both mentioned it this weekend. I was even quicker than this on the Gabapentin. Is some of this withdraw from the Gabapentin?

I don't know what to say either ,but it really dosn't sound as if you are capable of even attempting to go to work .

I am in the UK so things are different ,I would 'phone my doc first thing in the morning ,or even sooner if really worried ,I don't work now ,but I do remember thinking the same "I have to go to work" sometimes I would get in a bit of a state about having to go to work and end up just getting worse .

I know it is easy for me to say ,try to relax a bit more ,so hard when you are feeling so bad and worrying about work as well .I do feel for you .

Fred, Do you take anything else with the Tegretol besides the Indomethicin?? Min

Min,

I am taking a Claritin, a Prilosec, and a multivitamin daily with my Tegretol and Indocin. I was taking Gabapentin every day, but the attending neurologist took me off it the same day he started the Tegretol when I was in the hospital.
