Put on antidepressant for TN, now going through withdrawal hell

I meant ginkgo.
I had to ordered oils and bottles on online or maybe store can place the order.
I inhale and rub on gums, teeth, face., and in ear.
What does of ginkgo do you use?
My 2nd time in 3 years was not bad but progress to ear. Throat on one side, and new pain on the other side. I don’t know what the future pain Is going to be like.

Hi Linda
I take 80mg once a day.Not sure if there is a difference as the pain fluctuates. But today is brutal again.
I think I can get the ingredients for the oils at one of the health food stores near me.
Wishing you a pain free day.

Just an update very important. I had very few sides effects that only last a week at most off and on with compound cream.
When I did not increase after one year, my pain did increase and I went into withdrawal. Same symptoms like lyrica withdrawal.
But not as severe. I was using gabapentin 6%, ketaprofen 10% and ketamine 5%, I was told by my doctor no way was my burning skin, insomnia, lost of weight and appetite. And loud tinnitus was cause by the compound cream.
He said it is all caused by Anxiety. The Pharmcist like doctor said by using compound it does not get in your system. Therefore no withdrawal possible.

I will admit that the side effects of the cream were short and mild.
But I had the doctor take ketamine out and I increase the gabapentin in the cream. But it was too late and I got the prolonged acute withdrawal syndrome from not tapering slowly also known as PAWS. I am now on my own very slowly tapering off the gabapentin compound cream.
I can’t dicuss this with my doctor because he insist that it is anxiety. My anxiety has increased allot with the above withdrawal symptoms 6 days after each reductions.
Injury has been done to my nervous system, and it may take up to one year to heal. Lyrica withdrawals lasted one year and I did not have any permanent damage.

So I want you to understand that it does get in your system.
It was cause very little short-lived side effects.
But, when you reduce or quit antiseizure compound cream you will have withdrawal symptoms mild or moderate to deal with. I was completely surprised when this happen to me,
Ketamine could have caused this but i was applying a very small amount but for almost a year and a half.
I research ketamine and I was worried by what I read and the fact that there is little information on long use but not for recreation.
I am learning everyday for the past 4 years.
I presently using triglycic antidepressant, capsician cream, peppermint oil, and occasionally lilocaine
I have atypical trigeminal neuralgia from root canal by a hungry endonist.

lili,

I’m going to be the voice of doom… just be aware that once you start into the severe withdrawals (that no one tells you about until you’re experiencing it and people never believe until it happens to them) it can take MONTHS to recover, not weeks.

In fact, I would warn you to not even hope for a six week recovery from severe withdrawal. I would say assume it’s going to take months to get back to normal. Unfortunately I say this from experience. I went through PAWS with cymbalta. It took 14 months for me to reset to “normal” after 3 months on the lowest available dose of the medication. I’m not saying it’s going to take you that long, I seem to do everything the hard way, but based on all my research when PAWS started happening to me I found that the average recovery time was measured in months, not weeks.

Do not abandon hope! Just reset expectations a little! This, too, will end…

I do realize that it could take. A year to fully recover; however I am reducing very slowly.
Every time I make a small reduction it will take about 6 days for withdrawal symptoms to appear and last a few days.
I am surprised that I would have withdrawals from a compound cream.
I thought it was the safest way to treat pain. I did have very few side effects while on the cream only 3 or 4 times in a year.

Topicals are only “safe” in that they bypass your liver and kidneys more so than pills or liquids. Otherwise using a topical is no different than any other med and all side effects other than stomach upset and liver/kidney issues remain the same. It can actually be easier to overdose or over do it on a topical than it is with a pill.

At the end of the day you’re picking your evil…pain or pain meds?

Thanks for that information. I did have fewer side effects that didn’t last long while on it. I would be having now more withdrawal symptoms every day but I am taking 5mg. of Lexapro which helps a lot. I wil discontinue it when PAWS is over (about a year). I try Lexapro 10mg during my horrible withdrawal from Lyrica and it did not help much.
I was unable to work for 4 months because it was so severe.
I am learning about these drugs - antiseizure. I don’t want to have take them anymore.

Linda I’ve been wondering how you’re doing with PAWS? Of course this is mostly because I cut my gabapentin by 1/3 and have put myself into mild withdrawal. Misery loves company, right? Hang in there!

**i was having a lot of withdrawal symptoms. But not as severe as when I withdrew from Lyrica in one week under a neurologist . This time I was on my own since my internist said I was not having withdrawal symptoms from a compound cream with gabapentin and ketamine. I had him take ketamine out of the next subscription and continue with the gabapentin. I was having all the withdrawal symptoms before this for a month and pain since I never increase the dosage for the last 16 months. So PAWS started before I changed subscription. I was miseable and trying to work with extreme anxiety, insomina, lost 20 lbs in 2 month, loud tinnitus etc. I had taken Lexapro in the past which alway help anxiety without side effects. This drug works very well me. By taking lexapro 5mg a day, I was relieved of 95 % of withdrawal symptoms.
However, I have started a very slow withdrawal from the gabapentin cream. Each time I make a drop 6 days later the lexapro is not strong enough to block all symptoms.
For 2-3 days I have burning skin, fatigue, trouble sleeping, etc. but not so bad that I can’t work. Then I am back to normal. **
I take 5mg. Lexapro (excellent drug for me but not other) ,
along with Doxepin 25mg 3 times a day. I have taken Doxepin 25mg for many years for sleeping problems before I got atypical trigeminal neuralgia.
I use Capsician cream on tooth and gum and inside my ear.
It can be difficult to work with but help pain so much.
Also, I use peppermint oil.
I have taken and stop Lexapro 5-6 times in the last 13 years and I had never tapered that drug. I would just stop, and I never experienced withdrawal. I guess I was lucky on that one. The main reason I would get off was due to the generic drug after several months would make me want to crawl in bed every day. The brand name never cause this. It is about $300 for a 30 day supply now. I can’t understand why drug companies would do this. I read many people couldnot take the generic like me.
That is my “go to drug” whenever I am having a crisis in my life. It is SSRI like you are withdrawing from. I doubt you would want to try it.
I tried Zoloft but I did not like the way I felt on it.
I am reluctant to try any new drug now.

Xanax help in the beginning of withdrawal but my internist did not want me to take it daily.

I read that you go back up,and then withdraw 10% a month. Read www.survingantidepressant.org for instructions. But I think once PAWS started there is no cure except time. For me probably a year or longer.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for your comments and suggestions!
Yes, it did take several months for me to completely withdraw from the SSRI…

I am currently taking heaps of vitamin supplements, after getting various blood and other tests done, prescribed by my integrative doctor.

Unfortunately, I was put on Lamotrigine (also notorious for its withdrawal symptoms) and Dilantin when my TN pain got out of control again and I ended up in hospital for 2 weeks…

My neurosurgeon wants me to try a needle rhizotomy now.
I will be seeing him again in December.
Will keep you posted.

Thanks again and take care.

along with Doxepin 25mg 3 times a day. I have taken Doxepin 25mg for many years for sleeping problems before I got atypical trigeminal neuralgia.

Linda,
I saw this and it made me sit up and take notice. I was on a very similar drug (amitryptiline, as well as other tricyclics) for 35 years. Right after I finally got off of it, is when I developed ATN, it came on gradually, but was obviously set off by a tooth infection and extraction. I am convinced that the withdrawal from tricyclics is what CAUSED my ATN. I have also corresponded with another person in a similar situation. I’m curious as to how long you were on Doxepin, have you ever withdrawn, and what you might think about that possibility.

I started taking 75mg . Of Doxepin 1975 for depression and at that time I was diagnosed with psychological headaches. Not migraines. I was reduced to 25mg.at night the following year so I could work. The brand name Sinequan just came out in the 70’s and was so much stronger than the generic Doxepin.
I contine to use it after the daily headaches went away 2 years later. I use it for sleeping. It works great.
I took 25mg at bedtime for over 40 years to the present time.
During withdrawal from 3 years ago I asked my neurologist to increase the dosage but it did not help at all with the withdrawal headache. I did this a few months.
I discover on my own after i would take 25mg in the evening I would have no pain. So I tried it during the day time and it would relieve most of the pain. I am now taking 25mg 3 times a day.
I have never gone off of it. Wonder if my long term usage
Could have been a factor. It helped my anxiety and sleep.
I got ATN after a root canal was done an infected tooth that my dentist would not give me an antibiotics. She said it is the nerve. Alleeve worked on the pain. The hungry endonist
Did a root canal on a 2 month infected tooth after X-rays.

The withdrawal above was from Lyrica not Doxepin.
I have never tried to stop Doxepin since helps me sleep.

It is crazy how so many Neurologist tell people they don’t have TN when they do. It’s crazy to me that these specialists who go to school for training really need to go back to school and re-learn everything. I am glad you found. Teaching school to get actooer diagnosis.
