My Taste Buds Have Changed, Do You Think It's Because I am Titrating Up On Gabapentin

In relation to being punched, in my role I read all the profiles. So many members report their TN/ATN starting as a result of some punch up or assault. It breaks me heart that some are left with this dreadful legacy.

Sense of taste must be important to us or I cannot imagine we would have it. I hope I acclimate. I cannot remember having this when I took Gabapentin before. Teg makes me hear sounds differently! You just can't win!!

ugh! This is a charming situation. I would honestly like something to occur in my famous surgeons office. blow up maybe. He actually was paid. i recieved payback. I think most of us will have residual damage but ill take any improvement. what if there isnt any. cant go there, yet.

audruh, how are you?

If the doctors decide that I actually have nerve damage due to blunt force trauma, it was because I was punched. I am pretty open with my past, and the fact is that my exhusband was abusive. I thought that the TN would appear after an injury, but I am reading more and more that it can lay dormant for a long time as the nerve freaks out (I know, not a medical term, but you get my drift). I am pretty sure that if this is a TNP thing, then it was when a full can of Pepsi was thrown at me and I did not duck that time. My mom even said to me, "wouldn't that be great if just one more thing was laid at his feet." It is sad that even years later, when you think you are "healthy" once again, that abuse can rear it's ugly head to haunt you again.

As for taste buds... the Trileptal has me all messed up. Things aren't sweet anymore, and salt tastes awful.... All I crave is milk for some reason. Weird.

I had an abusive mother who regularly hit my head with heavy objects. I dare not think she did this to me in my later life. Also I have walked into low objects with a huge force twice! Sigh. I am not going there, I cannot bear it. I have it and must live with it, sigh!:( My first husband threw heavy pottery at me and I did duck so I "get" the scenario! Gits!

I was hit in the face at the age of ten by another kids head at full speed play "red rover". I have asked my neurologist if he thought this injury caused the ATN all these years later. He says both times he really doesn't think so. It hurt pretty bad when it happened, I couldn't talk of course, but I don't remember having any problems at the time. I can say that when I first started having symptoms of neuralgia it presented in this area and both teeth were dead inside where I got hit in the face... I also had one of those teeth pulled. The other tooth that was between these two was pulled years ago when I had braces put on in my twenties. I also had a root canal done on the tooth behind the one that I had pulled where I now have a bridge.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!! food for thought Min!

Don’t know if the gab. does this- but I know when I started taking methadone my sense of taste and smell practically disappeared!

I hope the Gabapentin works for you Jackie :)

Elaine , the reason is, I have been one of the rare cases that has had an adverse effect on the liver with Tegretol . Neurontin is metabolized outside the liver and MAY be kinder to me. Also I have regular migraines and my neuro is hoping that will be helped by switching. I am not totally pain free Elaine but I am lucky and I know it. I also have a lot of nerve pain in my arm, not connected to TN. It is with the hope that it will cover 3 conditions. The slow titration will stop if I start "shocking" again.

How are you get getting on with switch of meds Jackie? Has it helped the other symptoms at all? Besides all that I hope you are keeping well x

I am OKish just now. The TN I is controlled and the TN II is slightly better with the Gab. Apart from waiting for my wrist op and having to see an ENT about the pain in the ear I am OK. Just falling apart! LOL. Hope you are OK too?
