Constant pain vs. intermittent shock-like pain

Hello Kara,

Good to hear that acupuncture really worked for you. Are you still doing well, as your last post for acupuncture was in June, I suppose. How was your journey during the acupuncture and how long relief did it provided to you? Are you still on acupuncture?

Too many question I know, but what to do !!!

Well can you provide the email id of your acupuncturist, so that I can contact him/her?

Regards

HI all ~

I am almost afraid to post this in fear of jinxing myself. I feel that I am in possibly a remission. I went to see the accupuncturist. He had me lay on my side and he put needles all around my right ear, back of the neck, and down right shoulder. I had about four treatments spaced three days apart. Well, the pain has subsided considerably. So much that I am off ALL pain meds at the present time. I feel like my pain is about a one or two out of ten OFF the meds. And my internist prescribed me Pristiq (anti-depressant) which has lifted my mood considerably. So not sure if the accupuncture actually worked....I guess I will wait and see if the pain comes back soon. It might be worth a try?

Take care....Kara

Hi Friend! Thanks for asking...I am doing well. Virtually pain free. I had about 6 treatments of accupuncture where I would lay on my side and he put needles on "sensitive" areas, and would stimulate it with these electrical wires. I am not sure if that is what knocked my pain out....or if it was going towards a remission anyways? I have been pain free now since June.

I remember last year right before Thanksgiving I was having EXCRUCIATING pain in my right ear and right throat area. And I was also experiencing dizziness. That's what all sent me to the ENT and then, eventually, to my neurologist.

I saw my neurologist in Nov and was pleased to announce my pain was gone. I asked her what the heck? Had my blood vessel just moved away from the nerve spontaneously???? She said "they think" it's an irritated cranial nerve that causes the painful condition and that it "might have been" rubbing up against a blood vessel.

Go figure?

But on Thanksgiving today, I truly am thankful.

My accupuncturist's name is Gary Chen in Encinitas, California and his number is 760-634-1400 - it did not list an email, I don't think.

I hope you get to feeling better....it is an awful condition and this site is nice to talk to people about it. Wishing you a pain-free Thanksgiving!

Best, Kara

Thanks Kara for your valuable inputs and I hope that you stay pain free for rest of your life.

Was your acupuncture done with electrical wires or was it through needles? Also what part of your body those simulations given - ear, thumb, etc?

Regards

Hi there -

The accupuncture was done with him placing needles around my ear and behind the earlobe in different places, top of neck (right under ear) and temple area, top of jaw (TMJ area). He twisted them in until I could feel them fairly deep, and then he hooked up wires to all of the needles and stimulated them though some type of machine. Hope that helps!!

Take care, Kara

I have contant excrutiating pain also. The only relief I get is with pain medication.

Hi Amy - Who are you seeing at UCSD? That is where I go! I love Dr. Alksne - he's one of those rare drs that have both skill and bedside manner. I haven't really found a great neurologist there yet. But maybe that's because he can't do anything more for me except recommend MVD (which Dr. Alksne has recommended I do). No bedside manner - just gets to the point. But I guess that works too - it's not his fault he can't fix this.

The pain does change from day to day and minute to minute. No rhyme, no reason. And it seems to only get worse and need more medication. This truly is a Monster.

Nikki,

Thanks for the response! I am still trying to figure this website out. I am a Facebook junkie, but this is the first time I have ventured from it. :-) It is so good to hear that I am not alone in how my GPN affects me.

I am still waiting to get my appointment scheduled with UCSD, but I am officially a registered patient. My pain is most prominent deep in the inner ear, I went for years thinking I was having the most excrutiating ear infections. It finally got so bad that I could barely speak. I got into the ENT during an attack, and that was when I was diagnosed with GPN. Since then, the pain has been worse, and has lasted much longer. My episodes may last for 2 weeks, with intermittent spells of relief. I am so scared of another episode, I pray that I can get in for surgery before it hits again! It is scary how what I used to think was a 10 on the pain scale has changed so drastically. Sometimes it changes from day to day! I think it can't get any worse, but it does. I pray everyone can find relief from this hideous thing!

Hi all. I have been diagnosed with GPN at Boston Medical center by a neurologist. I was lucky that my PC Physician recognized the symptoms and sent me to see a neurologist. The pain started intermittently and over time the “attacks” became longer in duration. I started on Tegretol in December and have been virtually pain free until last night. I am now in hour 12 of horrible pain deep in my ear. It hurts to touch my ear and parts of my jaw. I have taken more Tegretol on Dr’s orders but so far no relief.

I feel for anyone who has to suffer with this horrible pain. I was doing so well up to now I had hoped to avoid surgery but if this goes on for much longer I don’t know if I can hold out. Good luck and best wishes to all that suffer like this. It is nice to know there are people here on this site who can understand the pain. Loved ones and others just can’t appreciate how debilitating it can be.

One question for everyone? I have started to notice along with the pain I now sometimes feel like my heart is fluttering and a weird feeling of being lightheaded. Has anyone had this as a symptom or could the pain be causing an anxiety attack? Just wondering. Thanks and stay strong.
