Anyone tried amitriptyline?

Hi..Im on 150mg Amiltriptaline....20ml Triliptal..and 250mg Lyrica..and various other for cholestral..thyroid...etc etc...I have to say...Iv never suffered any side effects that anyone else has...Possibly a little tired at the end of the day....but I think taking drugs far better than the horror of TN1 and 2....Iv also had some operation involving balloons..which sadlt hasnt wrked..and left me with Anthesai Dolorsa....dont worry...Iv never been able to spell ha!!...Iv put the memory loss down to age....both my sisters suffer memory loss...and they are on no drugs...every now and again I get lost mid sentance...but hey thats a small price to pay for having no pain...take the drugs..see what happens...Please understand having a baby suffereing from TN 1 and /or 2 is not easy....You cant give them bak when the pain kicks in...so unless you have a major support network who can take a baby at a moments notice..I would concentrate on getting the meds right so you can be as pain free as possible before you have a baby...good luck...

I know I said this earlier in the thread, but since it's been revived, I want to say it again.

If you have 24/7 constant aching burning pain, you should definitely give Amitriptyline a try. And work up to the 100mg/day dose before giving up on it. It's a lifesaver.

thanks crystalv, I have been given 10mg to take. My concerns are about medication and my ferility. I am on 400mg of gabapentin and 20mg of citalopram also.......I am so glad you are managing tho :) .......Carol I will reply in a mo, my handsa re aching

NY I found just 20mgs an hour before bed helped my constant burning temples which prevented me from resting my head on the pillow. A couple of weeks of being on it, did the trick. I increased from10 to 20mgs as I found 10mgs did not help. For the first couple of days I felt drowsy but this soon passed as my system got used to it.

I think I remember reading that TN tends not to strike during pregnancy, is that true? But of course it is coping aferwards, I think Carol is right in suggesting in putting yourself first before introducing a baby.

carol great to hear you sounding so positive, take care

I am taking Amitriptyline for Atypical TN for the second time. My first attack was seven years ago. My DR prescribed 25mgs. It saved my life! My pain left and never came back.

I am now starting it again after being in constant pain for three months. Working my way up to 30mgs and it does seem to be helping. I am still getting some break through pain but it is becoming less severe.

It is an anti-depressant but used in small doses to treat pain. It does make me feel very tired. I take it around 7 or 8 pm and am finding that I need to sleep 10 hours a night at this point. Honestly, it is welcomed for me though. My body has been so tense and stressed with constant pain it is the only break I have had. Over time your body should adjust and I am increasing very slowly. The other side effect I have is a dry mouth. Drinking lots of water helps. Weight gain is another issue with this drug. I have noticed I am having cravings and thinking about food a lot. I am trying to force myself to remember that it is the meds talking and not to give in.

Many of the other drugs used to treat TN seem to have way worse side effects so I think it is worth giving Amitriptyline a try. Another thing is that I don't think my TN pain is as severe as some other people's, based on their description. It may not help everyone.

Good luck :)
